36th Annual Wedding Fair Recap

36th Annual Wedding Fair at the Westin Bayshore
Saturday & Sunday, January 5th & 6th, 2013

The Westin Bayshore, always a scenic venue with views of the North Shore, was rich with information for the novice bride. Multiple booths offered everything from transportation to photography packages and guidance in choosing the best services for your wedding. Immediately, a discerning bride (you!) will see what value she can get for her money. But even more importantly- the event offers brides the opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with several vendors.

A few vendors stood out for us by igniting our imagination with charming set ups and inspiring tips. Among those was Erin Gilmore Photography who impressed us as fun and innovative by staging an vintage inspired theme. Wedding planners, Epic Events struck a theatrical notewith their stylish vintage influenced set-up. On trend, and revelling in the natural beauty of Vancouver, Wedding Design Studio wowed us with rustic décor composed of the warm glow of candle light and warm rustic tones of the this season's blush pinks and pale purples.

Shopping around for bridal services is not just about value and availability of the vendors but more so about personality fit and work style. Remember that your wedding crew will be following you throughout your day, so don't be afraid to ask many questions and get to know your vendors. We encourage practical brides to go to wedding fairs not only for the specials and packages offered exclusively at the events but also for inspiration ideas and connections with wedding services. Overall, this year's fair at the Westin gives you a chance to get social, stay seated for the fashion show provided by Ariana Bridal & Isbelle's Bridal, and more importantly explore a multitude of options for your dream day!

For more images of the event, please visit our Facebook albums for your viewing pleasure by clicking here.

Inspired Wedding Gowns
Anne Hathaway

Anne and Adam Shulman’s 29th of September 2012 wedding, according to People Magazine & More than 150 guests were invited for the wedding weekend, which started Friday with a rehearsal dinner at the Ventana Inn and Spa. A nearby private estate was secured for the ceremony. The wedding décor was inspired by nature, with many branches used to create a ceremony and reception to blend in with the majestic Big Sur surroundings. The Dark Knight Rises star kept her cropped pixie cut from Les Misérables for the big day, forgoing any hair extensions. She wore no jewelry, to accessorize, she donned a 1920s-inspired headband attached to a simple veil.

The bride tells Vogue Magazine about her experience collaborating with Valentino, “The memory of creating it with him is something that I will treasure forever. He somehow read my mind and designed the dress that I’d always wanted”.

CHRISTOS Gowns available at Blush Bridal & Special Occasions

Behind the Design: "CHRISTOS was established by Cyprus-born designer Christos Yiannakou. After heading his collection for over 20 years, he retired in 2005, leaving Amsale at the helm of the CHRISTOS collection. As creative director, Amsale has upheld CHRISTOS legacy for tradition while infusing a touch of her own modern sensibility into the collection. Amsale sees CHRISTOS as a natural extension of her own collection, as both are rooted in classic timelessness. A romantic at heart, she reveres CHRISTOS as a venue for her more traditional side. In opposition to the modern aesthetic which defines the AMSALE collection, CHRISTOS evokes a feeling of fairy-tale, femininity, and romance."

Tented Seating Cards

Tented seating cards are elevated to new heights atop a pillow of carnations. Cut several standard bricks of floral foam in half horizontally, soak in water, and place in shallow plastic flower-box trays. Snip off the carnation heads, leaving a little bit of stem on each, and insert into the foam; each half-brick should hold about two dozen carnations and four seating cards.

Lavender Seating Cards

For an aromatic seating card, two strips of paper -- with the guest's name printed on one end and the table number on the other -- are tied with satin ribbon to lavender wrapped with floral tape.

Beribboned Seating Cards

Before the meal, guide guests to their seats with the help of a beribboned bulletin board. Wrap the perimeter of a piece of plywood in paper tape to cover its rough edges. Then, using ribbons and fabric strips in assorted colors and patterns, cut pieces long enough to stretch across the board and around to the back. Stretch each ribbon across the surface, stapling both ends to back of board.

The soft and light trio demonstrates a sophisticated hair and makeup look that shows soft feminine charm while concentrating on the natural tendencies of your bridal glow. To achieve these looks, remember that the styles created are all organic shapes and contain no hard edges. The makeup is based on a soft palette that has been completely blended to create seamless lines. If you like to have your hair and makeup be as natural as possible but would like to draw drama to the eyes, try to plump up your lashes with a set of false flashes to create a focal point.

Behind the dress: Katherine

"The first thing that hits you with Katherine is the grandeur of the ballgown, and immediately it conjures the romantic, old-world fantasy of chivalry and stately ceremony and long hallways with footmen. You could see Katherine posed under a very opulent chandelier in a manor house, or framed beside an heirloom urn. And yet, it’s also a dress that breathes a very contemporary atmosphere. It has subtlety, it has a lot of artistic touches, a lot of life. Between the layers and layers of tulle and organza there’s nothing but air, so as the dress moves, and the shadows and tones become lighter, or darker, through those waves of fabric – you get a magnificent ballet of color and shadow. It’s especially splendid where you see these gatherings of bustled crinoline, creating asymmetrical figures in the line of the gown, like you see in the back, where it’s just a bit over the top in the way it’s been tacked up. In the front, there are beautiful blooms hand-rolled out of eyelash organza, just peeking out as if from a neatly-wrapped bouquet."

Behind the Dress: Joanna

"One of the themes of my collection this season is mystery: it’s always there for me when I’m working, because beauty itself is so mysterious. I love to design pieces that hide, that reveal, that stir our senses and our imaginations. With this collection, I wanted to invite my audience to experience the mysteries that lie beneath the surface. And of course, sometimes the best way to celebrate mystery is by reveling in lightness and frivolousness."

Behind the Dress: Jane

"This mermaid gown is at the core of our Fall 2012 Collection: here you can see just how flirty a blushing bride might become with the right gown. I love this dress, not just because it’s got a very smart, streamlined construction, but also because it’s so sexy!

The stretch crepe hugs the figure and accentuates the curves – you have as much “va-voom” in the front as you do in the back. And in motion, it’s just delightful. It’s a seductive siren song. With just that little bit of ruffled tulle in the train, it’s like a grace note, a little bit of bubbly, flirtatious energy in the final glimpse of this bombshell bride."

6pence Wedding Planning & Design

November 6th 2012

Crème de la Crème returned with this years consecutive Grand Wedding Showcase with undeniable success and “dream like” theme quality that catered to the name "LeReve". This year our Vancouver Brides were transported into a realm of opulence from the moment they came through the Four Seasons Hotel doors.  Jewelry designer Elsa Corsi greeted new brides and adorned them with jewels while the opera duo's enchanted sounds filled rooms
throughout the Hotel.

The refined quality vendors showcased their work in their individual exhibitors booths, displayed with beautiful ornaments and inviting ambience, each bride was lucky enough to discuss new stylistic ideas with each accomplished vendor as seen above with Lori Miles from Sweet Pea Photography, Celsia Florist, Atkinsons, and Intimissimi Music.

One of the many dream-like aspects of the show was the guided paths of breathtaking floral arrangements by Granville Island Florists. As we would never expect anything less of GIF, we couldn’t help but applaud the achieved structured size and quality of fresh flower palettes created as true centerpieces within the showcase.

Nonetheless, can one forget the stunning creations from the “Fashion Show” provided from Blush Bridal & Special Occasions, and Bisou Bridal.  As each model appeared from the draping curtains from designers like Marchesa to Reem Acra, each creation had our brides swoon over the latest and best each collection had to offer.

What was the inspiration for the collection?

I wanted this to feel very dreamlike, fantasy-like -- like they were fairies floating in the room. I stripped a lot of layers out. These gowns have a lot of intricate detail, whether it’s the draping or the use of lace or the overlays. What I really believe in is the long-sleeve column gown -- I showed it multiple times. How I created volume was the overskirt, that just showed you that there was something full about it but you didn’t have the weight of past seasons, so it was the stripping of layers, and making it more sensual.

What are the three biggest trends you’re seeing right now?

Sleeves are very strong in my eyes, long sleeves with a column silhouette. I also think dresses with a lot of draping in lace are another strong silhouette. And I think the overskirt is going to be a very popular accessory. Girls love to transform their gowns, so this is just having two looks in one night. All of the overskirts [on my dresses] come off, so you can have two looks.

Anna Elizabeth Cakes Featured in Westender Vancouver

WE Vancouver Article by Kelsey Klassen

Award-winning Vancouver pastry chef and artist Anna Wawzonek (pictured, [1]) can create an edible work of art to rival even the most vivid autumn display.

After opening Anna Elizabeth Cakes in 2011, her hand painted fondant designs won quick praise in Wedding Bells and Wedluxe magazines and were sought after for celebrations such as Oreo’s 100th anniversary.

Some highlights of the article we found inspiring:

Why do you think so much importance is placed on the tradition of cake at big events?

A wedding cake serves as a gorgeous centerpiece for your wedding day. In many weddings it is prominently displayed at a reception and is a great way to tie together all elements of your big day and really express your style as a couple.

Don’t be afraid to be original. I have many requests for a cake to be recreated exactly from a picture. That cake has already been the centerpiece at someone elses wedding. Let the designer work with that style and even some of the design elements to create a cake that is unique to you.

Inspired by our Lazaro post yesterday, we here at Vancouver Bride find that in art, music, and even in the design in weddings,we derive from looking into the past and extracting inspirations for the future. Therefore, we hope to create sections of Vancouver Bride in which we look back at our favorite classic and timeless weddings.

One of Vancouver Bride's favorite weddings that embodied rustic design with gentle textures and soft palettes
was the wedding of Hilary Duff & Mike Comrie.

Lazaro Spring 2013

We here at Vancouver Bride love our Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, and of course our Reem Acra. But let us not forget the work of designer Lazaro and his detailed and exquisite lace bodice Bridal gowns. This collection shows a variety of pieces that range between traditional use of lace with a layers of tool, and within contrast, the tints of colour under the peaks of the layered couture ballgown dresses.
